Ginostra: The Zen Side of the Volcano
A village with 30 residents, no cars, and the world's smallest port. The ultimate bucket list destination for solitude seekers.

Table of Contents
Ginostra is unique in the Mediterranean. It is an amphitheater of white houses clinging to the side of the volcano, accessible only by sea. There are no roads connecting it to the main village.
1. The Smallest Port in the World
The "Pertuso" (Hole) port is legendary. Until 2004, it was so small that ferries couldn't dock; passengers were transferred to small rowboats in open sea.
Today, hydrofoils can dock, but only one at a time, and only if the sea is calm. Arriving here feels like landing on a pirate island.
2. The Mule Taxi
Since the paths are too steep and narrow for golf carts, the "taxi" system runs on donkeys.
When you arrive, you will see the mules waiting. They carry the luggage, gas cylinders, and groceries up the steep stairs to the houses. You walk.
3. The Sunset Ritual
Because Ginostra faces West, it has the best sunset in the archipelago. The sun drops directly into the sea between Panarea, Salina, and Lipari.
There is only one bar/market. Everyone gathers there at 19:00 for an aperitivo in silence. It is a religious experience.
4. Staying Here: What to Know
- No Nightlife: If you want to party, go to Panarea. Ginostra is for reading, sleeping, and stargazing.
- Cash is King: There are NO ATMs. Bring all the cash you need. Credit cards work in the 2 restaurants, but relying on them is risky due to signal.
- Water: It arrives by ship. Use it sparingly.
