Stromboli Trekking: Routes and Access Rules (2026)

The complete handbook to hiking one of the world's most active volcanoes. Routes, safety regulations, gear requirements, and the 'Sciara del Fuoco'.

Stromboli is colloquially known as "Iddu" ("Him") by the locals. It is not just a mountain; it is a living entity that has been erupting continuously for over 2,000 years. Climbing it is a bucket-list experience, but it requires preparation, respect, and adherence to strict safety protocols.

1. Critical Safety Regulations (2025 Update)

Access is regulated by municipal ordinances. The following refers to Lipari ordinance no. 16 of 5 May 2025; check for later restrictions before departure.

⚠️ Limits in the Cited Ordinance

  • Stromboli side: unguided access up to 290 m only via Strada vicinale Parroco and Mulattiera Salvatore di Losa.
  • Guided access: authorized guides are required between 290 and 400 m on the Stromboli side. From Ginostra, the ordinance allows unguided access to 130 m and guided access to Punta dei Corvi at 400 m.
  • Summit: not authorized by this ordinance. The Sentiero Natura is also closed pending restoration.

Violations are subject to the sanctions specified in the ordinance.

2. The Two Main Routes

Option A: Guided Hike to Authorized Viewpoints

The guide chooses the route within the permitted area. Confirm the departure time and itinerary for your date; a summit ascent is not part of the access authorized by the cited ordinance.

  • Duration: confirm the walking time and return time with the operator for the authorized itinerary.
  • Terrain: volcanic sand, stones and exposed sections; the route depends on access restrictions.
  • Observation: visibility and volcanic activity vary. Lava or explosions are not guaranteed.

Option B: Permitted Lower Paths

Independent walking is limited to the paths and altitude specified for the chosen side of the island. Check signs and municipal notices; a viewpoint being below 290 m is not sufficient permission to use any trail.

  • Duration: depends on the open path and starting point.
  • Difficulty: uneven volcanic ground requires suitable footwear and preparation.
  • Suitability: assess the actual route and conditions for every member of your party.

3. Mandatory Gear Check

Confirm all required equipment with your guide. The ordinance includes helmet and dust-mask requirements for guided access above 290 m. The guide may refuse participation if equipment or conditions are unsuitable.

✅ Must Have

  • High-cut Hiking Boots (No sneakers!)
  • Headlamp + spare batteries
  • Water (1.5L min per person)
  • Windbreaker (It gets cold at the top)
  • Long socks (to keep out volcanic sand)

❌ Leave Behind

  • Denim Jeans (Use breathable hiking pants)
  • Heavy DSLR Tripods (unless permitted)
  • Drones (Strictly forbidden)
  • Flip flops or Sandal
  • Single-use plastic bottles (discouraged)

4. Difficulty & Stats

Distance and elevation gain depend on the authorized route, not on the 924 m summit height. Volcanic ground and exposed paths can make even a lower-altitude walk demanding.

Discuss the route with your guide. If you have health concerns, seek individual medical advice before choosing a hike or a boat trip; neither option is automatically suitable.

5. The Sciara del Fuoco

The Sciara del Fuoco is the volcanic slope where incandescent material may descend. Observe it only from permitted viewpoints or authorized boat routes, following current restrictions.
